As Canada marks the monumental 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Legion nationally, communities from coast to coast are reflecting on a century of steadfast service. But here in Tweed, we have an extra-special milestone to celebrate our local branch turns 80 this year being a steadfast component of our community since just after the WWII.
I had the pleasure of dropping by Branch 428 to chat with Jane Walker, the current President of the Legion in Tweed, chatting with her and others offered a reminder of the heart, soul, and tireless local leadership that keeps our branch thriving decade after decade. The Legion provides advocacy and support for veterans, raises funds and supports essential services for those in need, and responds to the unique needs of the community.
Their cornerstone activity is keeping Remembrance Alive: From spearheading the annual Poppy Campaign to funding youth education programs that ensure the memory is passed to the next generation, our local branch ensures that the sacrifices of our service members, including local heroes from all conflicts are never forgotten all while offering a place for people to gather and feel connected.
Celebrating 100 years of the Royal Canadian Legion nationally and 80 years locally isn’t just about looking back at history, it’s about celebrating the passionate leadership, like Jane, Pat, Randy, Tony and numerous other volunteers who give their time to ensure those veterans and their families are never left to stand alone and not forgotten.
If you haven’t popped into the branch lately, drop by and say hello. It’s a true privilege to have such a dedicated crew looking out for our veterans and anchoring our community.
